07-06-12 - Helix Bike Week Launch Party

We recently decided to become more involved with community projects to promote healthy-living; get more youngsters excited about exercise; and to meet more of our neighbours to spread the word about Roller Derby. A couple of our skaters suggested teaming up with The Helix – and it sounded perfect for us! To give a bit of background, The Helix is an on-going project in the Forth Valley, with the aim to “transform under-used land between Falkirk and Grangemouth into a thriving urban parkland for all to enjoy”.

Since this was too good an opportunity to pass up, Camelon Diaz from our PR Committee made contact with The Helix, and we were thrilled to hear that they were just as keen to work with us! As well as accepting our offer to volunteer on the project wherever we can, both FVRG and our Junior League, Fierce Valley Roller Cubs, also received an invitation from project worker Ben Williams, to take a stall at their Bike Week Launch Party on Saturday 16th June at Falkirk Football Stadium, from 11am - 4pm. After Ben came to visit our training session one evening, he was also keen to see us put on a scrim-of-sorts at the Launch Party to give visitors a better understanding of the sport.

The Launch Party sounds fantastic and we can’t wait to be involved with the festivities! Over 15 FVRG members will be there on the day to help out wherever we can, with some of the skaters particularly interested in trying out the stunt AirBag! As the event is to celebrate the start of National Bike Week, there will be masses of cycling-themed entertainment, including a BMX stunt team; a bike-powered disco; guided tours of The Helix cycle paths; and a special guest appearance from Mark Beaumont – the World Record Holder for an around-the-world cycle! To read more about the event or to contact The Helix direct, please visit their website , or join their Facebook Event for the latest news!

Hope to see you there!
