FVRG Support Women’s Aid with Tournament

On Saturday 6th February, Fierce Valley Roller Girls will host a ‘SUR5AL’ tournament at The Peak in Stirling to support Stirling and District Women’s Aid.

12 teams of 5 skaters will compete in the round-robin style tournament, taking on each opposing team only once for a full 2-minute jam.

This is the first ‘SUR5AL’ tournament that FVRG have hosted, but the event is in safe hands with our Line Up Manger, Tortie-Hell, leading the way. Tortie organised two extremely successful ‘SUR5AL’ tournaments in 2013 and 2014 that benefited local charities. She has called on that experience to plan the timings for the FVRG event in February, to communicate the final details to all 12 teams, and to organise t-shirt printing for the teams.

Typically at FVRG home games, any profits made are invested back into the league to support training costs and future home games. ‘SUR5AL’ tournaments always have a great community feel to them, so we decided to follow Tortie’s example and donate funds into our own local community: Stirling and District Women’s Aid.

Stirling and District Women’s Aid aims to offer support, information and temporary accommodation for women and their children who have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused by a partner or former partner. They provide refuge, information and support services for women, children and young people in the Stirlingshire area who are victims of domestic abuse. Please visit the Stirling and District Women’s Aid website for more information.

Team applications opened in November 2015 and almost immediately we were inundated with responses! An all-day tournament, such as this, requires two crews of Referees and Non-Skating Officials, and the response to this request for help was equally impressive.

The ‘SUR5AL’ teams of 5 skaters will be represting the following leagues from across the UK:

  • Auld Reekie Roller Girls
  • Bairn City Rollers
  • Blackpool Roller Coasters
  • Dundee Roller Girls
  • Fierce Valley Roller Girls
  • Furness Firecrackers – Roller Derby League
  • Glasgow Roller Derby
  • Granite City Roller Derby
  • Preston Roller Girls
  • Rainy City Roller Girls
  • Spa Town Roller Girls

Doors will open at The Peak at 11.30am, with the first whistle at 12noon. Please join our Facebook Event for the tournament for further details. Tickets are priced at £10 (+admin fee) from Brown Paper Tickets, and kids under 14s go free with a paying adult. If there are still tickets left on the day, they will be sold for £12 on the door.

The tournament after party will be held at the nearby Stirling County Rugby Club from 5pm. All event participants and spectators are welcome along to enjoy food, drinks, games and music with us. Please join our Facebook Event for the after party for further details.
